Why HEART Goals Matter for Strategy Development in Organisations

by Dorcus Magoba / Wednesday, 01 October 2025 / Published in HUMAN RESOURCE, PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, TLP

As the year draws to a close, many organisations are preparing for their annual retreats a time to pause, reflect, and shape strategies for the year ahead. Traditionally, these sessions are anchored in SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. While SMART goals provide the much-needed clarity and structure, they often miss an equally important dimension the human element.

At Tabita Initiative Africa, we believe that sustainable transformation requires not just smart planning, but also heart-driven alignment. This is where the concept of HEART goals becomes a game changer for strategy development and implementation.

What Are HEART Goals?

HEART is an acronym that ensures goals go beyond numbers and targets, and instead touch on purpose, passion, and transformation:

  • Honest – Anchored in truth and aligned with the organisation’s values.
  • Energizing – Inspiring and motivating teams, not draining them.
  • Aligned – Connecting organisational purpose with the personal calling of individuals.
  • Realistic – Ambitious but achievable within context, avoiding burnout.
  • Transformative – Focused on long-term impact and meaningful change.

When strategy embraces both SMART and HEART, it speaks not only to the head (logic and structure) but also to the heart (values and passion).

Why HEART Goals Make a Difference

  1. Ownership: SMART goals can sometimes feel like top-down instructions. HEART goals invite individuals and teams to see themselves as part of a shared mission. Ownership increases when people see how their personal values and energy connect with the bigger picture.
  2. Motivation and Energy: Numbers and deadlines are important, but they don’t always motivate. HEART goals ignite passion by making the work meaningful, ensuring strategy implementation is driven by purpose, not just compliance.
  3. Sustainability: Short-term wins matter, but HEART goals ensure organisations avoid quick fixes and focus instead on transformational change that endures beyond one year.

As organisations in Africa and beyond step into strategy retreats, integrating HEART into planning sessions could reshape outcomes. Instead of only asking, “What should we achieve?” leaders can also ask:

  • “Are these goals true to our values?”
  • “Do they energize our people?”
  • “How will they transform the communities we serve?”

This dual lens helps teams design strategies that are not just measurable but also meaningful.

During a recent Mastermind for Leaders meet-up at 1 Million Teachers, this concept sparked a powerful conversation: What would happen if organisations adopted HEART goals in their strategy frameworks? The consensus was clear they would see higher ownership, stronger alignment, and greater impact.

At Tabita Initiative Africa, we invite leaders, boards, and teams to try it this retreat season. Don’t just be SMART be SMART with HEART.

The future belongs to organisations that can marry efficiency with purpose. As you prepare to set direction for the new year, ask not only “What should we do?” but also “Why does it matter?” and “How will it transform lives?”

Because when strategy flows from both the head and the heart, organisations move from simply existing to truly transforming communities.
